How Does LASIK Work
LASIK (Laser in Situ Keratomileusis)
VisxLASIK is the most common refractive surgical procedure in the world. It is FDA approved to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (monovision). To achieve maximum results, Dr. Bryan applies wavefront technology to further customize the procedure.
The Benefits of LASIK may Include:
- Improved image of self
- Ability to enjoy a more active lifestyle than glasses allow
- Improved peripheral vision compared to glasses
- Enhanced comfort and safety
- Convenience
- Financial savings in the long run
About The Procedure
On the day of the procedure, while relaxing in a reclining chair, anesthetic drops are placed into your eye and a mild sedative is given to help you relax. A lid speculum is used to keep your eye from blinking which can create a slight pressure. A flap is then created using a highly precise instrument known as a microkeratome. The flap is folded back and the cool beam from the laser then removes microscopic amounts of tissue -less than the thickness of a human hair in most cases- to create a new curvature. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes from start to finish for both eyes and is described as “painless” by most patients.
Following The Procedure
Following treatment, you are likely to experience a slightly stinging or gritty sensation along with blurry vision. These symptoms are temporary and usually disappear in a few hours. Functional vision for most activities such as driving is usually achieved by the next day.
Safety…Our Top Concern
Our VISX® Star S4 laser has made a number of breakthroughs that have improved the safety as well as the patient results. VISX® invented the technology for laser vision correction 20 years ago and continues to be the most trusted name among eye surgeons. Using the WaveScan WaveFront System along with our laser, Dr. Bryan is able to deliver unprecedented levels of accuracy and precision essential to the CustomVue procedure.
Moving or blinking during your LASIK procedure is a common concern. Our laser has a 3D ActiveTrak™ so even if you move your eyes, the laser will automatically stop. It can follow any tiny motion of your eye instantaneously and automatically, repositioning the laser to ensure accuracy.
Variable Spot Scanning (VSS™) is another exclusive VISX® laser technology safety mechanism that allows for a larger treatment area. This has minimized earlier night vision issues where pupil size is a consideration.

You can relax knowing that your eye is precisely centered and that any movement during the procedure will not jeopardize either the accuracy of your treatment or your safety.
